Earth Day

Thank you to volunteers from Hotel Monaco for turning out with more than a dozen volunteers for Earth Day. We planted purple potatoes (donated from a green house), leveled soil, cleaned sprinkler heads, etc. 18 helpers did 22 hours of work by 10:30 in the morning.

Fresh!

We have fresh mulch (from the city), fresh crab apple blossoms, fresh spinach and fresh air! Remember to sign in (at east gate) when you arrive--we need to track information for grants (showing that this garden benefits the community). Cruciferous plants (broccoli, kohlrabi, etc.) are going in and a lot is growing. Bring your kids, stop by and dig in.

Eat Your Spinach

My 3-year old rewarded my gardening efforts the other day by shouting "I love spinach!" at the grocery store. We brought home 2 full bags of spinach from the community garden last week. The kids were not thrilled about the garlic chicken pizza with spinach (adult half of the pie), but they couldn't get enough of the quiche. Spinach is sprouting at the Community Garden, as well as peas and much more. Come give us a try and see what you can make out of the garden.

April Showers

Tut, tut, it looks like rain! Thankfully sunshine greeted us for the Easter Hop this past Saturday. Next year we hope to have even more egg-citement.

There are so many things planted I can't keep remember them all--beets, carrots and green beans went in recently. The secret to carrots is after they're planted, cover them with old carpet or burlap to draw up and hold moisture. Check daily after about 4-7 days and remove the cover as soon as seedlings emerge. Keep moist.

Your in kind donations of shovels, hoes, Pulaskis, rakes, gasoline, garden fertilizer, and leaves help keep this garden going. Every week from April til November, about 50 hours of work goes into the garden--your time and effort is greatly valued. And rewarded: the garden produces 10-30 bags of food every week. If you work, you'll get food. And as you work, we hope you're learning, getting acquainted with neighbors and getting some exercise.

We have several fun projects in the works to improve your experience at the garden, and to maintain what has been built these past 6 years.

Make the garden an hour of your week and the garden will help you grow for life. Rain or shine.
